Dubuque Soccer Complex, Dubuque Iowa
67 degrees and cloudy
Back in 2019 when then program was created, this was the second ever meet we attended. We have come back every year since. It gives us a chance to go up against the big 4A Iowa schools and see how we stack up against the teams from across the river. The weather held up fine Thursday evening but the course did not. Once again we had a mudders race which lead to poor footing and slower times. There were 23 other teams at the Jim Boughton Invite, all of which are located in Iowa.
Our first race of the day was the Boys Varsity race at 4:30PM. Due to course conditions the meet directors flipped the schedule so the top athletes could run on a faster course. There were 20 full scoring teams and 168 runners in this race. We had 8 competitors in this race. They were Lucas Jackson, Peter Wagner, Vincent Gullone, Liam Schauer, Ian Tancrell, Andrew Richardson, Nicholas Cobine and Wesley Haas. Although almost every boys varsity race goes out too fast, this one especially does. The combination of the drum core, spectators lining the majority of the course and top tier talent leads to mile PRs being set during the first mile. For good or for worse our guys were more reserved this first mile and made big moves during the second and third laps of the race. Keegan Decker of Iowa City Liberty won the race in a time of 15:25. Last year he ran 14:49 on this same course to finish second behind Quentin Nauman who now runs for Oregon. Decker is one of the top runners in the nation this year and will be looking to qualify for the national meet. Our top runner for the second week in a row was Sophomore Lucas Jackson in 9th place. His time of 16:21 is the third fastest 5k in the history of our program. His finish is also the highest placement of anyone on our team in the 8 years we have been going to this meet. Out of all the area schools he was the second highest placer behind Owen Anderson of Senior who finished two spots ahead of him. Our two runner was Peter Wagner in 12th. Top 15 get medals at this meet. Peter and Lucas are the only two men in our program to ever receive a medal here. His time of 16:35 is a new PR for the 5k distance. Vinny Gullone, still in the process of returning from injury finished in 17th. Liam Schauer finished in 63rd setting a new PR and passing a whole slew of guys over the last 200 meters. Ian Tancrell continues to stay in our top 5 and rounded out our scoring finishing in 75th, also with a new PR. Andrew Richardson in his first race back kept it controlled and raced pain free to finish in 102nd. Nicholas Cobine who also missed some time due to an illness finished in 120th. Wesley Haas finished in 127th in a PR of 18:41. Team wise Iowa City Liberty won the meet easily with 42 points over Iowa City High. We finished in 5th place, 1 spot behind Dubuque Hempstead. Dubuque Senior was 8th and Dubuque Wahlert was 10th
Our next race of the day was the Boys Fresh/Soph race. We had two competitors in Sam Cobine and Lucas Wurster. Similar to the Varsity race, Sam and Lucas got out quick going through the mile in 5:52. The duo ran together for nearly the entire race. Sam finished in 53rd and Lucas was 60th out of 184 runners. They both ran PRs. Our two girls competed in the JV race. They were seniors Tessa Gempler and Alivia Northrup. Ell Law once again sat this meet and is expected to be back for our next meet. Tessa finished in 48th place out of the 128 total in the race. Alivia ran a new PR to finish in 68th. The final race of the day was the JV boys race. It began at 6:30PM as the sun began to set. We had two competitors in Seven Smith and Achilles Morales. Seven enjoys the start of every race and sprinted to the lead for the first hundred meters. He then settled into his pace and ran a smart race. He went on to finish in 44th out of the 146 total. Achilles would finish in 116th. Our next race is the Freeport Pretzel Invite on October 3rd.
